Soldier’s quilt

Patchwork quilt
K1792 Patchwork quilt thought to have been made by Crimean War soldiers, with central panel made by Jane Amherst in the 1700s. It might have been hung at Montreal House for a visit of King George III in 1778.

It is likely that the central piece was made in the 1700s and the patchwork made in the 1800s. The ‘J A’ initials could refer to Jane or Jeffrey Amherst. The centre panel is broadcloth, designed to celebrate the marriage of King George III and Queen Charlotte. The surround is a dense wool cloth, the type used for soldier’s uniforms. Following the Crimean war, needlework was considered good therapy for convalescing soldiers.
